October 22, 2025
And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.

Reflection

This verse describes marriage as one of Allah's signs, highlighting its spiritual and emotional dimensions. Spouses are created "from yourselves," indicating compatibility and shared human nature. The purpose of marriage is "tranquillity" (sakinah) - a deep peace and comfort found in companionship. Allah places two essential elements between spouses: "mawaddah" (affection/love) and "rahmah" (mercy/compassion). Love draws people together, while mercy helps them forgive each other's faults and remain together through difficulties. The verse concludes that thoughtful people can see divine wisdom in this arrangement. This teaches that marriage is a spiritual institution designed for mutual comfort and peace, that successful marriage requires both love and mercy, that the ability to find tranquillity in another person is a divine gift, and that reflecting on marriage relationships reveals Allah's wisdom and care for human happiness.
