Surah Yusuf, Ayah 87

O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.
Surah Yusuf Verse 87

Explanation

These are the words of Prophet Jacob (Ya'qub) to his sons during their family's darkest hour, having lost Joseph and now Benjamin. Despite years of separation and multiple tragedies, Jacob maintains hope in Allah's mercy and encourages his sons to continue searching. The phrase "relief from Allah" (rawh Allah) encompasses both mercy and the relief that comes with it. Jacob teaches that despair of Allah's mercy is characteristic of disbelievers, while believers maintain hope even in the most difficult circumstances. This verse provides profound comfort during trials, teaching that hope in Allah's mercy should never be abandoned regardless of how dire circumstances appear, that taking practical action (searching) should be combined with spiritual hope, and that despair is incompatible with true faith. It encourages believers to maintain optimism and continue efforts even when situations seem hopeless.

Context

This verse appears in Surah Yusuf (Joseph), during the family's crisis when they have lost both Joseph and Benjamin. It demonstrates maintaining hope in Allah's mercy during the darkest times.
