Surah Al-Mumtahanah, Ayah 4

There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone."
Surah Al-Mumtahanah Verse 4

Explanation

This verse presents Prophet Abraham and his followers as an excellent example of how believers should respond to idolatry and false worship. They clearly declared their disassociation from their people's false gods and practices, stating that enmity would continue until the people believed in Allah alone. This represents the principle of "al-wala wal-bara" (loyalty and disavowal) - loving and supporting what Allah loves while rejecting what He rejects. This teaches that believers must clearly distinguish themselves from false beliefs and practices, that loyalty to Allah may require opposing even close family and community when they persist in falsehood, that there's no compromise on fundamental monotheistic principles, and that the goal is always to invite people to true faith. The verse doesn't promote hatred of people but rejection of false beliefs, with the hope that people will eventually embrace truth.

Context

This verse appears in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (The Woman to be Examined), providing guidance on maintaining clear religious identity and the proper response to idolatry and false worship.
