Surah Al-Qalam, Ayah 4

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
اور بے شک آپ عظیم اخلاق پر ہیں۔
Surah Al-Qalam Verse 4

Explanation

This verse is Allah's direct testimony about Prophet Muhammad's character, describing it as "great" or "magnificent" (azim). This divine endorsement of the Prophet's moral character came at a time when his enemies were attacking his character and calling him names. Allah Himself bears witness that the Prophet possesses the highest moral standards. The word "khuluq" encompasses all aspects of character - honesty, kindness, patience, justice, mercy, and every noble trait. This teaches that the Prophet Muhammad is the perfect example of moral excellence, that Allah Himself testifies to the Prophet's character, that moral character is of supreme importance in Islam, and that following the Prophet's example leads to moral excellence. The verse provides comfort to the Prophet during attacks on his character and establishes him as the ultimate role model for humanity. It encourages believers to study and emulate the Prophet's character in all aspects of life.

Context

This verse appears in Surah Al-Qalam (The Pen), where Allah defends the Prophet against his critics' attacks and testifies to his magnificent moral character.
