Surah Al-Fath, Ayah 10
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُبَايِعُونَكَ إِنَّمَا يُبَايِعُونَ اللَّهَ ۚ يَدُ اللَّهِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۚ فَمَن نَّكَثَ فَإِنَّمَا يَنكُثُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ أَوْفَىٰ بِمَا عَاهَدَ عَلَيْهُ اللَّهَ فَسَيُؤْتِيهِ أَجْرًا عَظِيمًا
Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you, [O Muhammad] - they are actually pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is over their hands. So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself. And he who fulfills that which he has promised Allah - He will give him a great reward.
بے شک جو لوگ آپ سے بیعت کرتے ہیں وہ اصل میں اللہ سے بیعت کرتے ہیں۔ اللہ کا ہاتھ ان کے ہاتھوں پر ہے۔ پس جو عہد توڑے تو وہ اپنے ہی نقصان کے لیے توڑتا ہے، اور جو اس بات کو پورا کرے جس کا اس نے اللہ سے عہد کیا ہے تو وہ اسے بہت بڑا اجر دے گا۔
Explanation
This verse was revealed during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah when companions pledged allegiance to the Prophet. It establishes that pledging allegiance to the Prophet is equivalent to pledging allegiance to Allah, since the Prophet represents divine authority. "The hand of Allah is over their hands" symbolizes Allah's presence and approval of their commitment. The verse then explains the consequences: breaking the pledge harms only the one who breaks it, while fulfilling the commitment brings great reward from Allah. This teaches that commitment to righteous leadership is commitment to Allah, that Allah witnesses and approves sincere pledges of allegiance, that breaking commitments primarily harms the one who breaks them, and that fulfilling promises to Allah brings great rewards. The principle applies to all sincere commitments made in Allah's name or for His cause.
