Surah Al-Dukhan, Ayah 38-39

And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play. We did not create them except in truth, but most of the people do not know.
Surah Al-Dukhan Verse 38-39

Explanation

These verses emphasize the serious purpose behind creation. Allah did not create the universe "in play" (la'ibina) - meaning not for amusement, randomly, or without purpose. Instead, everything was created "in truth" (bil-haqq), meaning with wisdom, purpose, justice, and ultimate meaning. The phrase "most people do not know" indicates that many people fail to recognize the profound purpose and meaning in creation, living as if existence is random or meaningless. This teaches that the universe has deep purpose and meaning, not random chance, that recognizing creation's purpose should influence how we live, that ignorance of life's meaning leads to purposeless living, and that understanding creation's truth brings responsibility and meaning to human existence. The verse challenges materialistic worldviews that see existence as accidental and encourages believers to live with awareness of creation's profound purpose.

Context

These verses appear in Surah Al-Dukhan (The Smoke), emphasizing that creation has serious purpose and meaning, contrary to those who view existence as random or purposeless.
