Surah Al-Dhariyat, Ayah 56

وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
اور میں نے جن اور انسانوں کو صرف اپنی عبادت کے لیے پیدا کیا ہے۔
Surah Al-Dhariyat Verse 56

Explanation

This concise verse states the fundamental purpose of human and jinn existence: worship of Allah. The Arabic word "li-ya'budun" comes from 'ibadah (worship), which encompasses not just ritual acts but complete submission, obedience, and service to Allah in all aspects of life. This means living according to Allah's guidance, recognizing His sovereignty, and orienting one's entire existence around pleasing Allah. This teaches that worship is the primary purpose of human existence, that life has clear meaning and direction centered on Allah, that all human activities should ultimately serve the purpose of worship, and that fulfilling this purpose brings meaning and satisfaction to life. The verse provides clarity about life's ultimate goal and helps believers understand that their highest calling is to worship Allah through both specific acts of worship and general righteous living. It answers the fundamental question of why we exist.

Context

This verse appears in Surah Al-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds), clearly stating the fundamental purpose for which Allah created conscious beings - to worship Him alone.
