Surah Al-Taghabun, Ayah 14

O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. But if you pardon and overlook and forgive - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Surah Al-Taghabun Verse 14

Explanation

This verse addresses a delicate reality - that sometimes family members can become obstacles to one's faith or spiritual growth. They might discourage religious practices, prevent charitable giving, or pressure believers to compromise their values. The "enmity" refers to their potential to harm one's spiritual well-being, not necessarily intentional malice. The verse advises caution while also encouraging forgiveness, pardoning, and overlooking their faults. This balanced approach acknowledges the problem while promoting family harmony. This teaches that family love shouldn't override religious obligations, that believers should be wise about family influences on their faith, that maintaining family relationships while protecting one's religion requires wisdom and balance, and that forgiveness and patience with family members reflect Allah's mercy. The verse helps believers navigate the challenging situation when family pressures conflict with religious duties.

Context

This verse appears in Surah Al-Taghabun (Mutual Disillusion), addressing the complex dynamics when family members may discourage religious commitment, while encouraging forgiveness and patience.
